Crafting the College Essay
This course takes students from the inception of the college essay through the final edit. The course begins with a discussion of an effective essay with specific focus on topic, tone, introduction, and narrative detail. Sample essays are provided and dissected with the aim of understanding what goes into an effective and purposeful essay while also avoiding common pitfalls. Students will attend the first session with other members of the class. After this initial session, students will create their first draft and sign up for individual office hours with the instructor, Katherine Schoppel, who will spend the final two sessions working one on one with the student editing the product as needed.
Ms. Schoppel is an English teacher with 25 years of experience teaching primarily juniors and seniors (the last 23 years have been at Barrington High School). She served as the team leader for the AP literature team before taking over the Academic Learning Center. She also is the owner of Authentic Applicant- a company geared towards helping students with the subjective components of the college essay.
